Subject Intent

A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

Within PE we aim to ensure that all pupils:

  • Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.
  • Are physically active for sustained periods of time.
  • Engage in competitive sports and activities
  • Experience challenge and enjoyment.
  • Establish a pattern of health and wellbeing, embedding a lifelong love of sport.

Physical Education and school sport is at the heart of Stewards Academy. We aim to provide all pupils with a positive PE experience and a wealth of opportunities in both physical education and sport.

The department creates a safe and positive environment in order to help pupils to reach their potential in PE whatever their level of ability – students develop confidence, leadership, team work and mutual respect through the delivery of a broad and balanced curriculum.

We pride ourselves on the excellent working relationships that we develop with our pupils; both in lessons, and during the vast array of extra-curricular clubs and opportunities we provide.

During KS3 and KS4, students experience modules in twelve activity areas. Most lessons are delivered to mixed ability groups although when appropriate pupils may be split into ability groups for certain activities.

Pupils benefit from a high quality curriculum delivered by specialist teachers who continually strive to update their own subject knowledge and expertise.

A regular part of the KS3 and KS4 programme is the inter-school competition offered through tutor group events including: cross country, football, dodgeball, table tennis, basketball, trampolining and athletics.

Pupils can also opt into examination courses in PE which include GCSE PE and Vocational qualifications in Sports Science and Sport Studies. These courses help to provide a platform for students who are considering taking advanced level PE or considering a career involved in sport, PE or the leisure industry.
