Humanities Diploma

Subject Intent

The humanities encourage us to think creatively. They teach us to reason about being human and to ask questions about our world by seeing things through the eyes of others using language, culture and histories.  It is through the humanities that we learn to be critical, empathic, balanced and informed in the face of subjective, complex and imperfect information.

The goals of the Humanities course are to subject students to topics that will inspire and interest them.  Students can access these topics by debate, experience and reading.  The curriculum for Humanities aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • read easily, fluently and with good understanding
  • develop a curiosity regarding the themes and topics that drives them to investigate.
  • acquire a wide vocabulary and word knowledge.
  • A tolerance and understanding for different cultures and customs that appear alien to them.
  • appreciate the rich and diverse nature of humanity.
  • write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences.
  • use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and views.
are competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate.
