Child Development and Care
Subject Intent
This qualification is for learners who wish to develop applied knowledge and practical skills in child development. It is designed with both practical and theoretical elements, which will prepare students for further qualifications in Child Care, Health and Social Care, Psychology, Sociology and Biology. All students will study three mandatory topics as follows: Health and well-being for child development, Understand the equipment and nutritional needs of children from birth to five years and Understand the development norms of a child from birth to five years.
Aims
The overreaching aim for Child development is to promote essential skills needed as a parent or guardian in the future. Health and well-being for child development This unit provides an overview of the roles and responsibilities of parenthood, from pre-conception through antenatal to postnatal care. Students develop an appreciation of the importance of creating the best conditions for a child to thrive. Understand the equipment and nutritional needs of children from birth to five years Students learn about the range of equipment and nutritional and hygiene requirements of children from birth to five years, and they demonstrate in a practical activity how these needs are met to promote a child’s development and well-being. Understand the development of a child from birth to five years - Students investigate the developmental norms of children from birth to five years and develop an understanding of the impact of play on the developmental norms. They apply and demonstrate their knowledge and understanding through practical activities. |
Key Stage 4
Pupils will be working on several topics to help understand reproduction and the roles and responsibilities of parenthood, understand antenatal care and preparation for birth, understand postnatal checks, postnatal provision and conditions for development, understand how to recognise, manage and prevent childhood illnesses and knowing about child safety. In year 10 and 11 students will be working on course work which covers Understand the equipment and nutritional needs of children from birth to five years and Understand the development of a child from birth to five years.
