Construction
WJEC Level 1/2 Construction and the Built Environment
Subject Intent
Construction and the Built Environment provides students with an engaging introduction to one of the UK’s most important and diverse industries. The course combines theoretical knowledge with practical and vocational learning, allowing students to understand how buildings and structures are designed, constructed and maintained.
Our intent is to develop confident, independent learners who can apply their knowledge to realistic construction scenarios. Students will explore the different people, processes, materials and techniques involved in creating the built environment while developing important transferable skills including problem-solving, planning, communication, teamwork and evaluation.
The course also enables students to explore the wide range of careers available within construction and the built environment, from skilled trades through to architecture, engineering, surveying and construction management.
Aims of the Course
The WJEC Level 1/2 Vocational Award in Construction and the Built Environment aims to give students a broad understanding of the construction sector and the opportunities available within it.
Throughout the course, students will develop their knowledge of different types of buildings and structures, construction materials, building services and the roles of professionals and tradespeople within the industry. They will consider important aspects of construction such as health and safety, sustainability and the processes involved in planning and completing construction projects.
Students will also have opportunities to apply their knowledge through vocational and practical activities, developing the ability to plan work, make informed decisions and evaluate the quality and effectiveness of their outcomes.
Course Structure
The qualification is made up of two units. All students complete Unit 1: Introduction to the Built Environment, followed by one specialist unit selected by the school.
Unit 1: Introduction to the Built Environment – 40%
This unit introduces students to the construction industry and the built environment. Students explore different forms of construction, buildings and structures, along with the roles and responsibilities of the professionals and tradespeople who work within the sector. They develop an understanding of areas including construction processes, materials, building services, health and safety and sustainable construction.
This unit is assessed through a 1 hour 30 minute on-screen examination.
Students then complete one of the following units:
Unit 2: Designing the Built Environment – 60%
Students explore how construction projects are designed and communicated. They develop skills in interpreting and producing design information, including drawings, plans and models, and consider the factors that influence design decisions.
This unit is assessed through a 30-hour controlled assessment based on an assignment brief provided by WJEC.
OR
Unit 3: Constructing the Built Environment – 60%
Students develop knowledge and practical understanding of construction trade activities. They learn how to plan construction tasks, select appropriate tools, equipment and materials, work safely and evaluate the quality of completed work.
This unit is assessed through a 30-hour controlled assessment based on an assignment brief provided by WJEC.
Where Could This Course Lead?
Construction and the Built Environment can provide an excellent foundation for further education, apprenticeships and employment within the construction, engineering and property industries.
Students may choose to progress to Level 2 or Level 3 college courses in areas such as Construction and the Built Environment, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Engineering, Architectural Design, Building Services or specialist construction trades. Practical pathways could include courses in brickwork, carpentry and joinery, plumbing, electrical installation, painting and decorating or other construction specialisms.
Students may also progress through an apprenticeship, combining employment with further training and qualifications.
In the longer term, the course can support progression towards careers such as architect, architectural technician, civil engineer, structural engineer, building surveyor, quantity surveyor, construction manager, site manager, project manager, building services engineer, CAD technician, carpenter, bricklayer, electrician, plumber and many other roles across the construction and built environment sector.
The qualification therefore provides students with both valuable practical experience and a strong introduction to the knowledge, skills and career opportunities available within this varied and continually developing industry.
