Wickford Conference

We had the honour of being invited along to speak at the Teachers Centre in Wickford at a conference entitled “Embedding the Olympic and Paralympic Values to Promote Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in your School”.

We had the honour of being invited along to speak at the Teachers Centre in Wickford at a conference entitled “Embedding the Olympic and Paralympic Values to Promote Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in your School”. Assistant Headteacher Mrs Erwood was accompanied by 13 pupils from years 7 to 11 – all of them had a diverse range of ethnic backgrounds. Mrs Mohamed and Mrs Wichowski were also speakers at the conference. The pupils greatly moved their large audience of teachers and Essex EMTAS staff with their words of pride in how their school had supported them and made them feel a sense of worth and identity regardless of their ethnic background. All spoke warmly of their beloved Ethnic Minority Pupil Voice group run by Mrs Erwood which was one of the key elements in the schools achievement of the Cultural Diversity Quality Standard Mark in both Gold in 2009 and Diamond in 2010. All the participants at the conference went away hugely impressed with the confidence, articulacy and passion which the children displayed in voicing their pride in the work of their school to promote cultural diversity over many years. Assistant Headteacher Mrs Erwood said “I was so very proud of our pupils who were able to take on such a challenging task and achieve something which would daunt most adults”.
