‘The Raspberry Pi Event’

A group of Stewards students attended the first Raspberry Pi event at Science Alive. This was an exciting opportunity for the young people to be a part of something that may be the blueprint for a nationwide initiative.

The Raspberry Pi is a credit card sized computer that plugs into your television and keyboard. It’s a capable little PC which can be used for many of the things that a desktop PC does (to find out more see www.raspberrypi.org). The Raspberry Pi Foundation has the aim of improving the number and skill level of young people interested in programming computers.

The focus of this pilot scheme was to identify and promote a low cost route into programming with the Raspberry Pi and then to see what projects genuinely interest the students. The club will meet weekly so that the students can  meet together, share ideas and progress with programming hobbies/projects.

Josh Winterbotham 9RP: "I found this event very helpful as I am studying Computor Science as one of my options. This club will improve my understanding what these machines are capable of."

Jay Moore 9MT: "I really enjoyed the trip to Science Alive and I have learnt how to program and set up a Raspberry Pi. I found it really interesting and fun and I am going to come to the club every week from now on."
