Engineering Our Future - Transport

A group of Stewards students attended the ‘Engineering Our Future – Transport’ evening event at Anglia Ruskin University Chelmsford this week sponsored by the Chelmsford Engineering Society.  Many local engineering businesses were represented at the exhibition for example BAE Systems (defence, security and aerospace systems) and E2V( high performance imaging company), enabling the students to ask questions and interact with the products that were on display and the engineering involved.

Short lectures were provided in the lecture theatre on : the design of cars from the past, present and future (Visteon UK : automotive design), how vehicles are propelled (Finmeccania UK : suppliers of aircraft, Space, defence and security systems ), the engineering involved in adding systems to the outside of army vehicles (SELEX Galileo UK: aerospace and defence electronics)  and the management of traffic on our busy motorways (Atkins Global : engineering and design consultancies). Representatives from Bloodhound SSC were there with a scale model of the Thrust2,  a car designed to break the land speed record of 622.407 mph held by Gary Gabelich in Blue Flame. They are aiming to design a car that will travel at 1,000 mph!

Lewis Townsend , Year 9, said: “ The talks were very good and they showed me outstanding new technology that will be used in the future to design vehicles for defence and the general public. ”

Jordan Huntley, Year 9, said: “It was a great experience finding out if this is what you want to pursue as a career. Eventually I want to study physics and maths when I leave Stewards and I will definitely be thinking about a career in engineering.”
