Reading Week

Stewards Academy celebrated their second ‘Reading Week’ of the academic year recently; this time with the theme of ‘Diaries’.

The week’s activities ran alongside the other reading schemes at Stewards and were intended to highlight the benefits of reading to students of all ages and at all stages of school life.

Activities included a writing competition where pupils wrote their own diary for 5 days, word searches, quizzes and crosswords.  Staff from English and other departments across the school did readings in the library at lunchtime from a selection of ‘Diaries’; these were very well attended by students.

The winner of the Write a Diary competition was Millie from Year 7 who wrote an incredible diary based around a child growing up in WW2.  Runners up were Finlay and Charlotte from Year 7, who both made an amazing effort with their diaries.  There were lots of other winners of the other activities; all received a certificate, book and Easter egg!

One of our winners, Steph from Year 8 was also successful in a submission to a Young Writers’ competition and has been awarded a certificate of merit as well as having her original piece of writing selected for publication – well done!

Clare Bailey, Reading Manager, said: “It was another very successful reading week; there were 100s  of entries into the competitions and the library was certainly a hive of activity all week! We are already planning our third week for the summer term.”
