Stewards Visit University

Stewards Academy was delighted to be involved with a new project that encourages KS3 students into Physics.

The first part of the day involved a visit to Emmanuel College at Cambridge University where students were given an informative and interesting presentation about life and opportunities at university, as well as a tour of the beautiful grounds and student facilities

The afternoon session took part at nearby Cavendish Laboratory, where our students joined three other schools to participate in ‘Mars Rover’ themed activities. The Stewards team was split into small groups to concentrate on the planning, building and testing of their own ‘Mars Rover’ vehicle designed to land and travel on the surface of Mars, and they were especially pleased with their development of an independent suspension idea based on rubber bands and pencils!

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the whole day including learning about life at a university and on a practical note, discovering that the width of wheels needs to be great enough to stop them sinking into soft surfaces!

Trip coordinator, Gary Cooper said: “This visit was a valuable experience for the students which will inspire them to consider a university education and generate an interest in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects and careers in the future.”
