Remembrance Day at Stewards Academy

Stewards Academy played host yet again to the Normandy war veterans and their families for a special afternoon of Remembrance, organised by English teacher and former Head Girl of Stewards, Miss Brigenshaw. Moving poetry in English and French, some written by the pupils themselves, stunning art work, superbly choreographed modern dance sequences and a sing- a - long of First World War classics - all made up a very touching programme of events. The veterans have been coming to Stewards for many years and are regarded by one and all as part of the Stewards extended family. Pupils who belong to the scouts, guides, army and sea cadets, all proudly wore their uniforms to school for the day and joined in the service at the end of the day. The sale of poppies was such that the British Legion had to deliver more boxes of poppies for the charity monitors to sell. The veterans were given a delicious high tea and younger pupils queued up to have the privilege of meeting the war veterans who mean so much to the children.

The two minutes silence was held with great reverence across the school and every member of the Stewards community felt a huge sense of pride in the values and respect that all the children displayed throughout the day. Deputy Headteacher Mrs Erwood said "Stewards ensures that all of our pupils understand the real meaning of Remembrance Day and the huge debt that we owe to our armed forces, both in a historical and a contemporary sense. The World War Two veterans who have been with us today are the proud embodiment of the values which Britain holds dear."
