Mathematics at Stewards Academy

Our Vision

At Stewards Academy, we believe that every pupil can succeed in mathematics. Our curriculum is designed to develop secure mathematical knowledge, fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills, while preparing pupils for GCSE Mathematics, further study and life beyond school.

We have high expectations for all pupils and aim to develop confident, resilient mathematicians who understand the importance and relevance of mathematics in the wider world.

Our curriculum

Our Key Stage 3 curriculum provides pupils with a strong foundation across number, algebra, ratio and proportion, geometry, statistics and probability. Learning is carefully sequenced, with key knowledge regularly revisited to strengthen understanding and long-term retention.

Regular assessment allows teachers to identify misconceptions, address gaps in knowledge and adapt teaching to meet pupils' needs. MyMaths and MathsWatch provide additional support for learning both in and beyond the classroom.

At Key Stage 4, pupils follow a carefully sequenced GCSE Mathematics curriculum, building the fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills needed to succeed.  The use of data and question level analysis in pupils’ PPE exams also provides them with a personalised guide to help them plan their revision.

Supporting Every Pupil

Pupils are taught in ability sets so that teaching, support and challenge can be appropriately matched to their knowledge and learning needs. We regularly review pupil progress and attainment to ensure that pupils are appropriately placed and can move between sets where appropriate.

Targeted intervention supports pupils who need additional help, while pupils who are ready for greater challenge are encouraged to deepen their mathematical thinking and tackle more demanding problems.

Additional Mathematics Qualifications

Alongside GCSE Mathematics, we offer a range of additional qualifications for pupils who want to extend their mathematical knowledge:

  • AQA Level 2 Further Mathematics
  • Edexcel Level 2 Algebra Award
  • Edexcel Level 3 Algebra Award

These qualifications allow pupils to explore mathematics beyond the core GCSE curriculum and provide a strong foundation for those who go on to study A Level Mathematics and other mathematics-related subjects.

Mathematical Enrichment and Challenge

We believe that mathematics should extend beyond the classroom. Pupils in Years 7 to 11 have the opportunity to participate in UKMT challenges, tackling unfamiliar and challenging problems that develop mathematical thinking, creativity and problem-solving.

We are proud that many of our pupils qualify for follow-on UKMT challenges, allowing them to continue developing their mathematical skills at a higher level.

In addition, pupils in Years 7 to 9 have a drop-down lesson once per half term to enrich their experience and understanding of mathematical ideas outside the normal Scheme of Learning.

We also run girls-only mathematical competitions and challenges, encouraging participation, confidence and enjoyment of mathematics. Pupils work collaboratively, solve problems and earn House Points through engaging mathematical activities.

Throughout the year, pupils can also take part in a range of competitions, enrichment activities and events that demonstrate the creativity and wider applications of mathematics.

Our commitment to developing an ambitious and enriching mathematics curriculum has been recognised through the achievement of the PTI Mark. This reflects our commitment to developing pupils' mathematical knowledge, providing appropriate challenge and enriching their experience of mathematics beyond the core curriculum.

Mathematics and Future Careers

Mathematics plays an important role in a wide range of subjects, careers and industries, including science, engineering, technology, medicine and finance. Through our curriculum and enrichment programme, we help pupils understand how the mathematics they learn connects to the world beyond school.

We want every pupil to leave Stewards Academy with a strong mathematical foundation, confidence in their ability and a positive attitude towards mathematics, equipped to take their next steps in education and beyond.
