Career development at Stewards Academy goes from strength to strength

The Careers Development Programme at Stewards Academy is going from strength to strength with our year 9s.

As students begin to think ahead to Key Stage 4 and what they might like to do Post 16, we ensure a lot of guidance and support is put in place for students as they consider their GCSE and vocational options.

Starting in September, the year group had the first of their assemblies looking at what the options process would mean for them and what choices they would have. This was followed up by an information booklet for students, parents and carers and an ‘Options Evening’ where each department had stalls showcasing what is involved with subjects in years 10 and 11. Lots of questions were asked and discussions had, before students had the opportunity to submit their first option choices online.

Using this information, a timetable dropdown day was organised where students had personalised timetables and were able to try out different options subjects.

Students were incredibly focused throughout the day and seized the opportunity to find out more.

One student said: “I really enjoyed the day. It has made me think about the choice I made, and I am happy with the subjects I have chosen. I am glad we got to try them out before we start year 10.”

Another student said: “I found it beneficial as I wasn’t sure about a couple of subjects and it has helped me make up my mind.”

All students in year 9 will now have the opportunity to meet with a senior member of staff and discuss their choices and what they are hoping to do in the future.

We are also encouraging all students in year 9 to experience the ‘world of work’ and spend the day with a family member in a workplace. This will be their first taste of ‘work’ beyond school and will hopefully get them thinking about where they would like to go for a week’s work experience as part of their Year 10 Careers Development Programme.

Di da Vighi, Careers Lead, said: “It is really important that our young people and their parents/ carers feel supported throughout the process of selecting their Key Stage 4 options. It gives students a sense of ownership about their education and they have a chance to talk to a wide range of staff as they prepare for it. We offer a diverse range of options including, but not limited to, humanities, languages, performing arts, visual arts, technology, sports, business, and vocational subjects. Year 9 is an important year for students to start thinking about their futures and the world of work outside of the academy. We encourage all students to fully embrace the opportunities available.”
