Welcome to Stewards

I am delighted to have the opportunity of introducing you to Stewards Academy.

At Stewards pupil achievement and opportunities are at the heart of all we do.  We strive to enable all our students to achieve their very best; be that in terms of academic achievement or contribution to the life of the school and wider world.  We develop in pupils self-confidence and personal and social skills so that they can become effective members of society and self-assured citizens.

In April 2017 Ofsted Inspectors wrote a glowing report which confirmed Stewards to be a good school with many unique features: good relationships between staff and pupils; impressive teaching; a positive climate for learning; a family atmosphere; strong leadership and management; exemplary pupil behaviour; an incredible range of extra-curricular activities and overwhelmingly positive parental support.

Inspectors reported: “Visitors to Stewards Academy are warmly welcomed, and immediately struck by the schools positive climate and the cohesiveness of its staff and pupils….the school runs like clockwork and everything is purposeful and well organised”.

The Inspectors noted that: “around the school, pupils are considerate and courteous.  They rise to the challenge of having additional responsibilities and are highly appreciative of the unwavering support that their teachers provide”.

We are extremely proud to have received such a positive endorsement of our work.  The report recognises the ethos and culture of Stewards, the dedication of teaching and associate staff and the atmosphere of support and wealth of opportunities provided to enable our students to achieve success.

Stewards Academy has gained an excellent reputation.  We have strong links with the business community and international links with other schools.  We have received numerous national awards in recognition of the high quality education we offer.  The website gives you more information about the work of the school, and an idea of what we value in a school of which we are justly proud.

Eight teachers from Stewards Academy headed off to complete ‘The Three Peaks Challenge’ last month: This involved climbing the highest mountains in England, Wales and Scotland in a weekend!

The long drive, the changing weather and injury did not prevent the group completing this momentous feat. One staff member said “It was an extraordinary weekend and we have had a wonderful experience… the views around us were breath-taking.”

The staff involved raised money for the charity MIND; in memory of two colleagues who recently passed away. Donations so far have reached over £1200, an absolutely fantastic amount for a worthy cause.

  • Higher National Diploma Performance

GCSE Drama students at Stewards Academy were treated to a performance ‘Behind Closed Doors’ by a previous Stewards student, Chris Richards, and his fellow peers from Hertford Regional College for a performance ‘Behind Closed Doors’.

As part of their Higher National Diploma (HND) course the group devised their own piece of theatre-in-education work around the issue of domestic abuse and the impact this can have. The students have created a powerful piece of work that showcased all of their performance skills. The group decided to perform in-the-round and use forum theatre, allowing the audience to make decisions for the characters at different stages of the story.

One audience member said: “I really enjoyed the performance and found the way they portrayed the topic to be very powerful.”

Another said: “I thought the performance was very informative. It helped everyone to see an issue that is often forgotten about. It was also helpful to learn more about the college and HND course.”

Di Johnson, Head of Performing Arts, said: “This was a great opportunity for the students to learn more about the opportunities at HRC and see high-quality devised work. It was a pleasure to see the journey Chris has been on since leaving Stewards and how his performances have gone from strength-to-strength.”

Eight students from Stewards Academy competed in the 2017 ADS UK Youth Rocketry Finals at Stow Maries Aerodrome. Following a fourth place position in the South-Eastern regional finals the group had a challenge on their hands against nine other regional finalists from across the country.

The ‘The Bomb Squad’ rocket had to be capable of transferring a raw egg to an altitude of 775 feet and then safely returning it to the ground via 2 parachutes, all in the time range of 42-45 seconds. The aim was to score as few points as possible. For the qualifying flight the rocket  " The students involved have represented Stewards phenomenally and it was a privilege to have bought them to the competition.  It's fair to say that we all had a blast!"
