P.E. Rugby Round-Up

The Year 7 Rugby team got off to a fantastic start in their first two games playing as a team in their first season together at Stewards. The Year 7’s took the game to the Burnt Mill opposition in their first game right from the start with some great runs from Kevin A and also James S. James S showed great speed and went over early for our first try of the game against a determined Burnt Mill. It was only the team effort with Stewards superb tackling that won them the match. Great sportsmanship was shown by both teams after the game by shaking hands at the end of a very tough encounter.

The second game was against Passmores which was once again a very tight contest for the year 7 team with Stewards showing great resilience and making some try saving tackles to not concede any tries. Stewards eventually managed to break down the Passmores defence with James S again scoring a try in his 2nd match but it was his terrific tackling that earned him the man of the match award.

The Year 7 team now go into their next set of matches still having not conceded any tries and are working hard in their rugby lessons as well as the rugby training after-school on Thursdays. We wish them good luck in their next games.

The Year 8 Rugby team were missing a couple of key players for their first set of games to kick-off their defence of the Harlow cup which they won in stunning style last year as year 7’s. They played St. Marks in their first game who they beat in last year’s final so it was always going to be a tough game for them. Stewards were relying a lot on Tyler J to break the St. Marks defensive line and although Stewards did manage to break the gain line on a number of occasions it was St. Marks who scored the opening try. Stewards showed great resilience to get back into the game and scored a try of their own thanks to some good rucking over the ball and then powering over the top to score a try in the corner.

However the St. Marks team then managed to score a couple of quick tries due to some uncharacteristic lax tackling from Stewards which saw St. Marks run out as eventual winners in the opening game.

After a poor start to their first game and a tough team talk by Mr Rayney, Stewards were really impressive in their next game against Saint Nicholas. The Stewards team dominated with the ball and managed to score a couple of quick tries thanks to some great running and passing with the ball. After a short while, Stewards ran in their third and last try of the game. Saint Nicholas did manage to pull one try back right at the end of the game but this was only a consolation try.

The Year 8’s will now play their next set of games and we look forward to them producing the same style as last year. - Mr Rayney
